That Well-Spent 200 Hours

“Good day! This is Marivic from Radyo ng Bayan. You may start your OJT here on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 8 a.m. Bring your endorsement letter. Thank you.”

That message completed my day.

My internship at Philippine Broadcasting Service/ Radyo Pilipinas from June to July was something I will never forget.

Getting there

Prior to the internship, AM station was really on top of my list of radio stations I want to get into. Any station from the office of the PBS was really what I’m praying to get into.

It’s second week of June when my friends and I started “OJT Hunting”. Our first stop was, of course, the Philippine Information Agency building where the office of the PBS is located. When we arrived, the security guard asked us to leave our resume and said he will just give it to the HR. I felt disappointed because I thought the slots for interns were already full and HR might not entertain us anymore. So days passed, I applied to other stations hoping that I could finally start my internship.

After 4 days, I received a textmessage from the HR department of PBS that an intern exam will be conducted at their office. I was really surprised because I did not expect that they would still consider my application.

A few days later, I found myself seated at the conference room of PBS together with my fellow interns for the orientation.

Assigned Station: Radyo Pilipinas- Overseas

I chose to be in Radyo Pilipinas on a whim but I don’t regret it a bit. DZRP is the overseas broadcast of the PBS. I felt lucky to be part of the station and got to meet the people behind the DZRP- Mr. Rey Sampang, acting station manager, at the same time acts as our supervisor in the internship, Sir Edwin, Sir Ric, Ma’am Ven, Ma’am Tess, Sir Soc and Ma’am Myrna.  It was humbling to meet these people who lay out fresh perspectives for the benefit of everyone’s understanding.

Also, I really enjoyed the company of the staff because they treated us as if we’re also co- employees there and not just an ordinary intern. They really helped me to make the most out of my internship.

Every time I was at my internship, I never said that I’ve had a non- sense day. Each and every day, I got to learn something new, even it’s just a word that sounds new to me. I never had a day wherein I don’t have a story to share with my friends or family that was happened in my internship on that particular day.

“Konektado Ka!”

This is the slogan of PBS AM stations. It is the phrase or expression that the anchors say as they introduce the Bayan Patrol reporters before delivering news. But, for me, it’s more than just the words I would hear every day or I would even say at the radio booth. These are the words I use to describe the feeling of being an intern in PBS.

I felt connected to the people I worked with. The relationship I had with the people in the station and with my fellow interns evolved into something that felt like family even in such a short time. I remembered my supervisor who’s always reminding me and my co-intern that he didn’t want us to be treated as “basta- bastang” trainees but rather he wanted us to be treated as normal employees. He’d rather call us “staff” and not “trainess” because for him, we were already part of the station even for a short period of time.

Given the nature of the industry, I always had to be in-the-know of the latest news. I felt connected with my environment. Through my internship, I got to see the bigger picture of things and helped me to view other angles of news stories. Just to cite an example, I still remembered when Sir Rey on his program, DZRM, was talking about the issues on Bangsamoro Agreement, and on the side, he actually made me familiarize with the first military leadership in ARMM until it’s now recognized as Bangsamoro. From that, I got to know more about the history of the ARMM government and further understand its current status.  Through my internship, I was given fresh lenses with which to view the world of broadcasting.

Paid with Experience

Being an intern, I was not given any salary unlike a regular employee. But after the internship, I would say that I’ve got something that is more valuable than the money. It’s the experience that I can take with me wherever I go, whatever I do, even share with whomever I meet.
During the course of a month, I answered phone calls and queries during radio programs, provided anchors or producers with materials or information needed for the program, called countless people and offices to schedule interviews, wrote news materials every day, recorded news articles, abused my browser by so many tabs that were opened all at the same time just to research on the latest news and happenings, I also met politicians and personalities during the course of my internship .

Aside from all of the duties mentioned, one of the things I loved doing the most during the internship was co- anchoring. It was the right decision for me to be assigned in Radyo Pilipinas because I also got the chance to be part of other stations like in Radyo Magasin and Radyo ng Bayan since my supervisor also handled programs there. I was lucky that I was given the opportunity to participate in discussions about issues being tackled on each of his radio programs.

My stay in PBS has been more exciting as they launched a program called “Youthalk”. Every day, I looked forward to that 4- 5pm program. I really enjoyed those times I co- anchored the program. I got the chance to bond with the other interns and got to know them more and of course, each of us has his own piece to share. And to double the fun, there’s Mama Renz who guided us while we’re doing the report.

Learnings…

It was a well- spent 200 hours with PBS. I’ve picked up a lot of life-long values and lessons along the way that I now carry with me.

I learned to be patient and resourceful. I learned the value of hard work and sacrifice, learned to get things done. I learned how it felt to want so much to exceed expectations.
I learned to absorb knowledge like a sponge and to accept criticisms. I managed to be flexible to meet deadlines.

The month I spent in PBS is beyond awesome. I will always be grateful for being part of the station in a short span of time. The experience is something that is irreplaceable.

I am Marjorie Olfindo from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines- a proud PBS – DZRP intern.

My so-called Free Happy Pills

One afternoon, out of boredom, I pulled out a lot of the back- issues of different magazines I have and headed to our terrace. So, as I was running through the pages, I encountered this very inspiring words from William Dempster Hoard which says, "Happiness doesn't depend on what we have, but it does depend on how we feel toward what we have. We can be happy with little and miserable with much."

Then after a while, just found myself loving the unique experience of being with my thoughts. Until, random stuff are freely running down through my mind and remembered the quote about happiness I read a while a while ago.

Different scenarios in my life have flashed back in my mind wherein it all shows how happy I am in those circumstances. Those things in which I call then, my "free happy pills". So, let me share those with you.

1) Keeping the peace
Most of the times, I must say that nothing can make me happier than than the peace and quiet of being myself. I just love to reflect, and draw energy from everything within me- no matter what's going on.

2) Being with my family
Nothing can also beat being with my family. Being with them (siblings/ cousins), I can reconnect with the sources of happiness, I though I've outgrown, like watching cartoons or anime and playing those games which we used to play when we were kids. Being with the younger cousins can really bring out the child in me- and double the fun.

3) Embracing with nature
In just staring with the long, wide beach of Bagasbas, which I used to go to when I'm in my hometown, was just one of the best feelings. Simply being with nature together with its fresh air, the scent of flowers, and clear blue skies can relieve stress and rejuvenate my senses.

4) Surfing the crowd
Being surrounded with tons of people and hanging out with my friends is also one of my get- happy secret. I just love being with them and do some crazy stuff. Yeah, they're the ones who never fail to cheer me up when I'm down.

5) Act like the "Little Miss Sunshine"
Brightening someone's day and leaving a smile on their face is something that's worth giving a try. Giving some random acts of kindness made me realized that I received even more joy than I had given away.

Before, I thought there are many things I need to have in order to be happy, but the truth is, happiness can be achieved even in the simplest ways. The list written above was just a few of the so many "free happy pills" I always try and consider, I know, there's still so much to try out there. We should just always remember that everyone should find a key to put a smile on their face and have more joy in life.

R & R: Random and Ranty

I know, I haven't posted a blog entry in soooooo long, so I thought I'd share about the past second semester I had since it's one of the reasons for my infrequent blog posts. It's just 5 months but it felt like half of my life just had passed (yeah, I think it sounds exaggerated =P) So, one word to describe the past semester- CHALLENGING!

The physical and mental strains I had were caused by the undying homework/ paperwork, a lot of TV productions (children's show, short film), laborious creation of journal and magazine, effortful thesis making plus the demanding professors and to top on everything, being the leader in most of these requirements mentioned. So, how on earth can I say that this semester has not been a challenging one for me?! How?!

But, in spite of that, at the corner of my mind, there was something that says I should be grateful for whatever happened. I know if those things didn't come on my way, I would have never discovered how tough I am to face all those challenges. I would have never known that I can be at my best in doing something. Having a lot of class productions, its inevitable that we should be working in different groups, and because of that, I must say I've learned to deal easily with my classmates. Accomplishing a certain task/ requirement has been easier since we've became closer with each other.

I will always be proud of myself that I've made it to be on my third year. Though, I'm not sure yet if everything I've done will be paid off. I'm hopeful that it will be because I know for myself I did my best in every way. But then, it's more than the grade I will be receiving, in everything happened not just in this past semester but in my three years in college, I must say I've learned so much. I've learned not just the things that I've read from the books or lectures that have been heard from my professors, it's beyond the four corners of our room. It's  a kind of learning that I will always remember and I will always bring with me anywhere I go. It will always be the key in becoming the better me.

National Bookstore Warehouse Sale

Christmas comes early for book lovers in the metro, as National Book Store holds its warehouse sale at the 4th floor of National Book Store Quezon Avenue from November 15 to 18 (10 am to 7 pm), with up to 80% off on books, supplies and gift items.

It's my first time to go to a big NBS sale like this and when I get there I was like "oh my gosh!". A LOT of people are already there even we just came 30 minutes after the store opened. There are really a lot of book lovers out there, huh?

The ridiculous looong queue for the cashier. P. A.T.I. E.N.C.E

I must say the book selection is awesome in terms of value for money, whether you're buying for yourself or planning to make your way through your Christmas list. Books are laid out in tables marked by denomination (P30, 50, 100..P500 below), and there's a mix of fiction and non-fiction titles in good condition, both in paperback and hardcover in various genres.  I'm looking for some specific book titles but I'm not successful to find some of those. But it's okay because I still have found these books plus four journals all for Php750 only (*hee*)!

My NBS book haul today! :)
I really enjoyed the whole NBS warehouse sale experience and I can tell you that it's definitely well worth the effort. =)

Idols Rocked The Stage

Last Friday, September 21, 2012 was totally a blast! My classmates and I attended the one-night concert dubbed "American Idol Live Tour 2012" featuring the top 10 winners of the last season of American Idol. These include Phillip Phillips, our very own Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, Colton Dixon, Skylar Laine, Hollie Cavanagh, Elsie Testone, Heejun Han, DeAndre Brackensick and Erika Van Pelt.

We went to Smart Araneta Coliseum 4 hours before the concert to line up. When we arrived, there was a single file of line already ( I must say, we're not just the only one who's really excited for this concert.) I was pretty excited days and even weeks before this concert because of our own Pinoy Pride  Jessica Sanchez and at the same time, I've been a kind-of fan of this batch.

When we got inside the arena, we picked the best spot for a general admission seating as possible. =) While waiting for the Idols to perform, we just patiently watched the commercials on the projector screen and we just appreciate it when the commercials of different TV series played.

Then, the lights got dimmed and the crowd went wild! I saw that the crowd really got lots of energy as the group (except from Philip) performed the song "Sing" for their opening number.
I'm just not familiar with some of the songs they have performed but here's the list of the performance that I can still remember. Forgive if it's not the complete set list of the concert. :))
  • "Master Blaster"DeAndre Brackensick
For me, this number allowed DeAndre to flex the growly, gravely aspect of his vocal range and of course, he did not forget to whip his hair back and forth to punctuate his jaunty spins
  • "Undo It"- Skylar and Hollie
  • “Glitter In The Air” – Erika Van Pelt
I must say Erika was  great, she even got a loud cheer from the audience. Actually, she reminded me so much of Pink and with her very powerful voice, it just showed how she commanded an arena-sized crowd.
  • "Moves Like Jagger" - Group Number ( Hollie, Joshua, Colton, and Erika)
One of the performances I enjoyed. The dance moves of Joshua here was really something that should be seen.
  • "Party Rock Anthem" - Heejun, DeAndre and Jessica
  • “Whole Lotta Love” – Elise Testone
Best word I can describe Elise's performance- SHOWSTOPPER. Elise sang this song really very well, she oozed with confidence and appeal. Ohh. forgot to mention, the crowd went wild when she performed.
  • “Rumor Has It” – Elise (Deandre, Erika backup)
I can say this performance was a lot of fun. My classmates and I enjoyed singing along and this was also another crowd favorite.
  • “Meant To Live” – Colton Dixon
When Colton came out, the audience gone really wild and crazy. It's not just cheers but also shrieks. Waaaahhhh. Honestly, I'm not really familiar with the song but  seeing Colton perform was a visual feast and that's an important thing. LOL
  • "Piano Man"- Colton Dixon
  • “Just the way you are” / “What Makes You Beautiful” - Group except Philip
I'm fan of these songs so I really enjoyed it. We sang and danced along with them. The theme was Hawaiian tropic so the stage was filled with bright and neon colors. I loved how they ended the first half of the show.
  •  “Why You Don’t Call Me” – Jessica Sanchez (Joshua and Deandre backup)
So, here comes the BB Chez cheers. They really gone wild, seriously.
  • “Proud Mary” – Jessica, Deandre, Josh
Here's another SOLID performance. It's not surprising that I had  goosebumps with her performance. Joshua and DeAndre were great backup singers/ dancers on this one.
  • Best Thing I Ever Had” – Jessica
BB Chez were really in the house! They gone wilder than ever. =)
[Actually, I was expecting her to sing more popular songs from Idol like Stuttering or/and And I Am Telling You.]
  • “Stay With Me” – Skylar
  • “Rolling in the Deep” – Hollie (Erika and Elise backup)
Hollie's performance was incredible. We had a great time with this performance as we danced with Ericka and Elise, we just simply loved their moves equivalent to the lyrics of the song. :D
  •  “Give Your Heart a Break” – Hollie
Again, I enjoyed singing along and her performance was absolutely terrific.
  •  “It’s A Man’s Man’s World” – Joshua Ledet
  • “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me” – Joshua and Jessica
  • “Superstition” – Phillip Phillips
He has good command of the stage.  He engaged the audience well and he was great on guitar, I must say. In between, he was mumbling something but I could barely understand him because of the shrieks and cheers from the crowd.
  • "Somebody That I Used To Know” – Phillip and Elise
Definitely one of the highlight of the show. I love the song and I loved how they performed it on stage.
  •  “Home” – Phillip Phillips (with the Top 9 as backup)
  •  “Raise Your Glass”- Girls
  • “Glad You Came”- Boys (Eventually, girls joined in)
This was a great way to close the show.  Everyone did their parts well, the performance had great energy and these songs are a great feel good way to close out a concert. Though, the audience was screaming for "moooorrrreeee...moooorrreee!" of course, they had to end the show.

All in all, I can say that the show was really worth the price of admission. We really enjoyed it and we definitely had a good time.

**I wanted to share some pictures from the concert but I won't be able to at this time since I'm still waiting for my friend to upload it. Pls. bear with me. =))

The Magic Stayed With Me

It's been a week since we went to Enchanted Kingdom but the memories are still fresh in my mind. I was with my sister, cousins, and my cousin's boyfriend. Actually, we've been planning this trip like- so long ago and this time, we're so lucky because my cousin found a deal on ensogo wherein we purchased the ride all-you-can ticket at only Php345 instead of the usual price at Php500.

The park first opened on July 28, 1995. And it took 18 years before I first set foot in it. LOL. I was really excited about this trip and I was really giddy to walk into this magical place. We wanted to be there on the very first hour so we'll have more time to try all the rides. Before we entered the park, security personnel had to check our bags to see if there were things like deadly weapons that were obviously not allowed to bring inside. But I was disappointed that even foods were not allowed to be brought inside; it's either you're gonna eat it before you enter or you'll "donate" or surrender it with them. I've seen some people who lined before me surrendered their food. So I put the burger that was supposed to be my baon on the part of my bag that I think was safe on the security guard's eyes. But I was wrong, they still found my food so I did not have choice but to donate it since I really want to go inside. (Until now I still feel bad about the food. LOL).

Just want to share with you that the prices of the food inside are actually double than it's normal price when you buy it at grocery stores. So it's better if you have your own service and bring your own food for lunch or snack. But since we only commute to get there, we had our late lunch at Waltermart, a mall near at EK just a 5-minute ride from there.

The place is not that crowded as we get inside, maybe because it's kinda early. But I assume that eventually it will be filled with people after some time since it's also a long weekend and I guess everyone needs the magic that EK could give.

So, for now I will let the photos do the talking...

My sister and me with Princess Victoria and Eldar the Wizard (EK's signature character)

Rio Grande Rapids-
Want a wet n' wild experience? Then, this is definitely for you. The experience was dynamic and fun!
Wheel of Fate
The wheel of Fate was the second ride we had. Riding this let me see and enjoy the whole view of the park and beyond.. :)
Space Shuttle

Before I set my feet in EK, I told myself that I won't leave EK  without experiencing to ride the roller coaster.  So as we head on the Space Shuttle, I'm excited and nervous at the same time. This literally takes my breath away and makes my heart skip a beat. Choosing not to shout is definitely not an option. After the ride, I can say this is one of the best and the thrill and excitement are really worth it!
Anchors Away
I can say this is one of the freakiest rides! This ride moves like a pendulum at a very fast speed. As it sways back and forth, I feel like I'm gonna fall any moment and it really makes my stomach muscles contract at its highest level. All throughout the ride, I just S-C-R-E-A-M!!!
EKstreme Tower Ride
I really want to try this ride but I didn't had the chance to experience it since when we decided to give this a try,  it's getting late and we still need to catch the earlier trip possible to Cubao. I promise myself the next time we get back to EK, this will be one of the first rides I'm gonna try.

Overall, my first time in Enchanted Kingdom was a blast! I would definitely love to go back and enjoy again everything that EK offers. I hope the next time I'll get back here, I'm with my whole family sharing the fun and excitement. Indeed, the magic stayed with me. =)
